Mtwara

Mtwara, the capital of Mtwara Region, is located in southeastern Tanzania along the Indian Ocean coast. It was initially developed in the 1940s as an export hub for the British Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme, but after the project failed in 1951, the city saw limited development. Despite being designed for 200,000 residents, Mtwara currently has a population of around 141,000.

The Mtwara Region covers an area of 16,710 km² (6,450 sq mi), making it roughly the same size as Kuwait. A significant part of the region consists of coastal plains, rolling hills, and marine ecosystems.

The city has a deep-water port, originally built during the groundnut scheme, which has recently been upgraded to handle large container ships, strengthening its importance in trade and transportation.
