Dodoma, officially known as Jiji Kuu la Dodoma in Swahili, is the capital city of Tanzania. Covering an area of 2,669 square kilometers (1,031 sq mi), it is roughly the same size as Luxembourg or twice the size of Greater London. Unlike Dar es Salaam, which sits along the Indian Ocean, Dodoma is centrally located on Tanzania’s plateau at an elevation of 1,120 meters (3,675 ft), giving it a semi-arid climate with hot days and cool nights.
With a population of 765,179, Dodoma serves as the administrative center for both Dodoma Municipal Council and Dodoma Region. In July 2024, it officially overtook Arusha as Tanzania’s third-largest city in terms of both population and infrastructure.
The Tanzanian government announced in 1974 that the capital would be relocated from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma to centralize governance. However, the full transition took decades to complete. A landmark moment came in May 2023, when President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially inaugurated the new State House (Ikulu) in Dodoma, cementing its status as Tanzania’s political center. While Dodoma now houses government institutions, Dar es Salaam remains the country’s economic powerhouse.
Though primarily known as a government hub, Dodoma boasts unique attractions that make it an interesting travel destination:
